What Is a Periodontal Visit? Gum Health, Deep Cleaning and What to Expect

"Periodontal" refers to the structures that support teeth: gums, ligaments and bone. A periodontal visit is an appointment where assessment and treatment target gum disease (periodontitis) or high-risk gum conditions — sometimes with a dentist, hygienist or periodontist (gum specialist) depending on severity and practice setup. It is not the same as a routine polish only; it usually goes deeper when pockets, bleeding or bone loss are concerns.

Why you might be referred or booked for periodontal care

  • Bleeding gums, pocket depths deeper than healthy levels, or visible gum recession.

  • Persistent bad breath linked to gum infection.

  • Loosening teeth or history of treated gum disease needing maintenance.

  • Before some restorative work, when gum health must be stable first.

What happens at the appointment?

Typically the clinician reviews your medical history and may measure pocket depths around each tooth — a periodontal chart. They look for bleeding, plaque, tartar and how gums attach to teeth. Radiographs may show bone levels. Treatment might include scaling to remove tartar above and below the gumline, sometimes with local anaesthetic for comfort. In advanced cases, referral for surgical options or specialist care may be discussed.

Deep cleaning versus regular hygiene

A standard hygiene visit removes tartar and stain from surfaces you can mostly reach. Periodontal therapy targets bacteria and deposits inside pockets where gum has detached from the tooth. You may need several visits or quadrants done separately. After active treatment, maintenance visits — often every three to four months initially — help keep disease controlled.

Home care after periodontal treatment

You will be shown how to clean along the gumline and between teeth with brushes, floss or interdental aids. Consistency at home is as important as what we do in the surgery; without both, gum disease can return.

FAQ

Q: Is a periodontal visit painful? A: With anaesthetic when needed, most people manage well. Some soreness after deep cleaning is common and usually short-lived.

Q: Can gum disease be cured? A: Gingivitis can often be reversed. Periodontitis is usually managed long term rather than "cured" — ongoing care stops it worsening.

Q: Will I lose my teeth? A: Not everyone with gum disease loses teeth; early treatment and maintenance improve outcomes. Individual prognosis varies.

Q: How do I book a hygienist or gum assessment? A: Book online or phone the practice.
