The Value of Flossing (and Why Many Patients Love Their Waterpik)

Brushing only reaches about 60% of your tooth surfaces. The gaps between your teeth trap plaque and food, and if that area is neglected, you risk gum inflammation and decay between the teeth. Cleaning between your teeth every day is one of the most effective things you can do for your oral health, and there are several ways to do it well.

Why cleaning between your teeth matters

Your toothbrush bristles cannot reach the sides of your teeth that sit against each other. In those spaces, plaque (the film of bacteria that forms on teeth) builds up and, over time, can harden into tartar. When plaque and tartar stay along the gumline, the gums respond with inflammation: they can become red, swollen and bleed when you brush or floss. That inflammation can progress to gum disease if left unchecked, and the risk of cavities between the teeth increases. Daily cleaning between the teeth removes plaque before it mineralises and helps keep your gums and teeth in good condition.

Ways to clean between your teeth

String floss works well for many people, but some find it awkward to use or have braces, bridges or limited dexterity. Interdental brushes are another option and suit some mouths better than floss. Water flossers use a pressurised stream of water to clean between the teeth and along the gumline. They do not replace brushing, but many patients find them easier to use consistently and a useful addition to their routine, especially where string floss is difficult.

Waterpik and water flossers: what to know

Waterpik is a well-known brand of water flosser. Research has compared water flossing with string flossing for reducing plaque and improving gum health; many patients report that they find the water stream comfortable and are more likely to use a water flosser daily. If you have braces, implants or bridges, a water flosser can make cleaning around them more straightforward. It is not a guarantee of perfect gum health on its own: technique and consistency matter, and your dentist or hygienist can show you the best way to use one for your mouth. At our Nottingham practice we are happy to discuss which method suits you at your next check-up or hygiene visit.

How to use a water flosser

  • Use it once a day, ideally before or after brushing. Fill the reservoir with warm water (or as the manufacturer recommends).

  • Start on a low pressure setting and aim the stream at the gumline and between the teeth, not at the mirror.

  • Move systematically around your mouth so you do not miss areas; take your time.

  • Empty and rinse the reservoir and tip after each use so bacteria do not build up.

What we recommend at Pear Tree Dental

We encourage everyone to clean between their teeth in a way that works for them. For some that is string floss; for others it is a water flosser or interdental brushes. If you are unsure which method suits you, or you want to improve your technique, we can go through it at your next check-up or hygiene appointment so you leave with a routine you can stick to.

FAQ

Q: Is a Waterpik a replacement for brushing? A: No. A water flosser cleans between your teeth and along the gumline; it does not replace brushing. Use it in addition to brushing twice a day.

Q: Can I use a water flosser if I have braces or implants? A: Yes. Many patients with braces, bridges or implants find a water flosser easier than string floss for cleaning around appliances and restorations. Your dentist or hygienist can show you the best technique.

Q: How often should I clean between my teeth? A: Aim for once a day. Doing it at the same time as brushing (before or after) helps make it part of your routine.

Q: How do I know which method is right for me? A: We can discuss your options at a check-up or hygiene visit. Book online or call us on 0115 931 2935 to arrange an appointment.
